Memory is set in the early 1900¡¦s and focuses on a topic no other TVB series has focused on - and that is the cruel treatment of Chinese Workers at that time. The term ¡§selling baby pigs¡¨ was the slang term used to describe this trade. Ignorant and poor Chinese would basically ¡§sell¡¨ their lives to become workers for colonies out in the South Pacific. They were often deceived by companies saying they would get good pay and working hours. Some were even tricked into thinking they were going to California to ¡§dig gold¡¨. These workers, commonly called ¡§baby pigs¡¨, were treated like animals. A company would buy them and they became the company¡¦s property; they were branded on their upper arm. They had to work long, hard hours with very little pay. They were often beaten and abused. Their living conditions and food were dirty and horrible. They were basically on a ¡§hell on Earth¡¨. |
